Half Marathon Cancelled

Due to safety concerns, the Daffodil Half Marathon has been cancelled.

After many talks with folks who deal with traffic safety, and many sleepless nights, I have decided not to hold the half marathon event at the 2018 Joanie Bumpus Daffodil Run.

After my initial contact with the CHP, I felt with their help, we could manage a safe run along Indian Springs Road. After more thought on their part they informed me they did not have enough people to manage traffic, and have it safe for the runners. After talking to other traffic safety groups I realized that because the road lanes are only 10 feet wide and very little shoulder, it would not be safe to make the lanes narrower for vehicles and have room for runners.

I have learned that it is easier to control traffic for a running event or parade in a large city with easier, more defined cross streets. Or in a park like Bidwell in Chico, or a road with a bike lane or more shoulder.

I appreciate the support you have given me with this idea but I apologize for not planning ahead before announcing the half marathon to the public.

Thanks, Gene
